MEDIA STATEMENT BY THE GAUTENG DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ON LOOTING BY LEARNERS IN SOWETO

The Gauteng Department of Education condemns the participation of learners in the looting of shops owned by foreign nationals in Soweto yesterday.

The looting and attacks follows the killing of a Soweto teenager by a foreign shop owner on Monday.

We appeal to leaners to refrain from these illegal activities and respect their school uniform. We are working with the districts and principals to ensure that all learners are in class during the contact time and continue with learning.

“There is no excuse for our learners to be seen roaming around the streets during and after contact hours in school uniform,” said MEC Lesufi.

“I am calling on Cosas to mobilise against this thuggery and political backwardness. We should take lessons from the 2008, shameful xenophobic attacks that were directed at foreign nationals residing in our country,” said MEC Lesufi.
